The key issue in the proof copper-nickel Type II Indian Cent series of 1860-1864, the 1861 was distributed in limited numbers due to the onset of the Civil War that year. In fact, it is highly likely that no more than 200 or so coins were actually sold despite the fact that the Mint struck approximately 1,000 examples. This fortunate survivor is a no-questions Gem with honey-rose color over fully struck features. The obverse is a bit more vibrant than the reverse, but both sides are equally free of bothersome contact marks or other blemishes.
