This 1933-D Oregon Trail half dollar is the scarce tripled die obverse variety with a tripled image noted on HALF DOLLAR, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and on lower portions of the United States map. This is a great Superb Gem specimen with smooth, white surfaces and slight, speckled russet-brown, red, and olive patina near the borders. These were struck to be featured at the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition held in Chicago. Only 5,008 were distributed during this Depression year. The issue is further distinctive as being the only Denver Mint half dollar of its era. Today this and most other commemoratives are priced significantly below what they were 25 years ago, a very interesting situation.
