Rev: The American beaver gnawing on the British oak, the date 1776 is in exergue. Despite the date 1776 on the reverse of the medal, this type was struck in the United States Mint circa 1805. It is often referred to as a Sansom Medal because it was part of a series of pieces ordered by Philadelphia merchant Joseph Sansom. A sharply struck example with handsome olive-brown surfaces.
