54 millimeters. A bold cameo impression, both sides are brilliant with a bright, silver-white sheen. Scattered hairlines cloud the obverse field somewhat, and a few small contact marks at the rear of Washington's cheek are also noted. The reverse is smoother, and the devices are sharply executed in strike. This medal was published by coin dealers S.H. & H. Chapman in April of 1889 in connection with national celebrations marking the centennial of Washington's inauguration as the nation's first president. The obverse portrait is attributed to Charles Wright Cushing, and it is said to be "his finest work."
