A beautiful wide margin Third Issue specimen with the proud portrait of Spencer Clark, then superintendent of the National Currency Bureau, the predecessor agency to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Clark's act of vanity in placing his own portrait on currency designs circulating during his incumbency was responsible for the enactment of legislation prohibiting the portraits of living persons from being on United States currency. The PCGS holder incorrectly identifies this note as a Fr. 1232SP Second Issue. Est. $700 - $1,000
