Lot #2291. 1870-CC Seated Liberty Silver Dollar. MS-61 (NGC).

Historic 1870-CC Seated Liberty Dollar

Condition Rarity Mint State Grade from NGC

Description: The fabled Carson City Min in Nevada struck its first Silver Dollars in 1870 with a delivery of 11,758 examples of the Seated Liberty type. Only three more CC-mint Seated Dollars issued were to follow, and all are rarer than the 1870-CC in numismatic hands. Apparently, the first-year status and consequent historical significance led to a small number of '70-CC Dollars being set aside as novelty items by contemporary Americans.
The foregoing discussion is not meant to mislead one about the undeniable rarity of this issue in Mint State. Most survivors were retrieved after having seen at least some circulation, and Uncirculated examples have come down to us almost purely as a matter of chance. A sharply struck BU, the coin we offer here is veiled in warm, mostly even, lavender-gray patina. More direct angles call forth iridescent undertones of blue-gray and pinkish-apricot colors. Free of outwardly distracting abrasions, and destined to serve as a highlight in an advanced cabinet.

NGC Census: just 8; with a further eight finer (MS-64 PL finest).

PCGS# 6964.
