Lot #2815. 1921 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-65 (PCGS).

Overall Smooth, Richly Frosted Gem 1921-P Walker

Description: After only the 1921-D, the 1921 has the second lowest business strike mintage in the entire Walking Liberty half dollar series of 1916-1947. A mere 246,000 pieces were produced but, whereas the 1921-D and (especially) the 1921-S suffered a high rate of attrition through circulation, the 1921 as a Philadelphia Mint issue was saved to an appreciable extent by contemporary collectors and dealers. In an absolute sense, of course, the 1921 still ranks as a very scarce issue, and among Walkers it is still an important rarity that ranks seventh of 65 issues in terms of total number of Uncs known to exist. Jeff Ambio (2008), in fact, accounts for fewer than 500 Mint State survivors, the vast majority of which grade no finer than MS-64.
An absolute scarcity and a significant condition rarity, this delectable Gem is remarkably smooth with nary a distracting abrasion to report. Bathed in billowy mint frost, untoned surfaces are also impressively sharp in striking detail from the rims to the centers. We note an interesting concentration of die polish lines (as struck) in the lower right obverse field --  a feature seen now and again on Mint State examples of many Walking Liberty half dollar issues. Sure to serve as a highlight in an advanced collection.

PCGS Population: 53; with a mere four finer in MS-66.

PCGS# 6583.
