Facing bust of Robert Fulton, name arcs above, dual-date 1809-1909 below, reverse with his ship, Clermont, full steam (and sail) ahead to left, NEW YORK TO ALBANY arcs above, single stars flank, THE CLERMONT / H / ONE TRIP on three lines below. Frosty and entirely mattelike yellow gold with bold luster and equally bold design elements. This particular celebration caused all sorts of excitement in and around New York City, including at the American Numismatic Society (which had recently moved into its beautiful new building on Audubon Terrace). Beyond that area, the observation attracted relatively little attention. Today a fairly lengthy string of medals and other remembrances can be collected in connection with it.
