A near-Gem Proof example with an original look. Both the obverse and reverse have some areas of mottled olive-gray patina. This nice example has considerable contrast between fields and devices, although this contrast is somewhat subdued by the toning. While 700 examples minted in Proof quality suggest that this is a plentiful date, the truth is that a relatively small number of those coins survive today in unimpaired preservation. We believe that this issue is one of the rarest of all Proof Trade dollars coined from 1873 through 1883. It is virtually as rare as the 1873 issue, however, not as widely desired. Truly an underrated issue in today's marketplace.
