The production methods of the early Carson City Mint help to explain why so many survivors of the 1872-CC quarter delivery are damaged, corroded, or otherwise impaired. Even in those states, however, the '72-CC is a rare coin as most of the 22,850 pieces produced were undoubtedly lost in circulation or later melted. Although well worn, the present example is certain to arouse the interests of specialists. Both sides are a pleasant dove-gray color with a light reddish hue as the coin is examined under a light. The rims are fully distinct from the peripheral devices, and there is quite a bit of bold definition remaining in the most deeply recessed areas of the design. The overall appearance is exceptionally problem-free for an extensively circulated representative of this key-date, CC-Mint issue.
