Obv: lovely finely styled Liberty Head to left, PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES * around, George Morgan's initial on the truncation. Rev: thin wreath around blank area for presentation inscription. Fine matte finish on both sides. A few small dark spots which are mentioned only for accuracy. There is little otherwise to disrupt the surfaces.
A lovely medal that is usually seen issued, and likely very rare as here. While this piece does not include the specific history of award that makes lifesaving medals so desirable as a class, this is a perfect example for the purist collecting fine medallic art, particularly products of the United States Mint. This particular issue holds the further distinction of being the only gold mint medal struck in .900 fine gold, as used on the standard coinage, while other issues were generally on .999 fine gold. Another distinction of this specific example, is the presence of the very rare original case of issue.
This lot is accompanied by the very rare original case of issue and an NGC Photo Certificate for the medal. The box and certificate are available to the winning bidder upon request to Stack's Bowers Galleries after the close of auction.
