Obv: military bust left, J.H.H. below. Around, in three concentric rings: G. WASHINGTON ELC, 1789 SERVD, 8 YEARS J ADAMS EL, 1797, 4 Y.T. JEFFERSON EL, 1801 8 Y J. MADISON EL, 1809 8 Y J. MONROE EL, 1817 8 Y J.Q. ADAMS EL, 1825 4 Y. A. JACKSON EL, 1829 LAFAYETTE APPOINTED MAJ. GEN. OF THE U.S. ARMY 1777 DIED May 20, 1834 . Rev: Eagle flying, in its talons a U.S. shield and a scroll lettered: ALL MEN ARE / CREATED EQUAL / JULY 4, 1776, Above: INDEPENDENCE ***, below: **** **.
All of the major design elements are apparent. Most of the letters are legible, but some are too faint to make out without a magnifier. The antique silver-gray surfaces display a considerable amount of die rust, as struck. A few areas of milky color are noted behind and below Washington's portrait, and on some high points of the eagle.
