The 1878 nickel three-cent piece was struck in Proof format only, and to the extent of 2,350 pieces. This is the first year that the Mint issued production records for minor coins. The 1878, which is often seen with a good amount of mint luster, unusual for a Proof, has been a classic for a long time. This Superb Gem is very special and is fully struck with lovely sea-green, rose, steel-blue, gold, and crimson coloration that occurs in a variegated fashion over the two sides. The expertly preserved surfaces are nearly flawless.
