An astonishing blend of rainbow coloration adorns each side of this Gem Liberty nickel. Typically struck with satin luster and clean, unblemished surfaces. An important final-year issue.
Our friend David Lange wrote a nice essay on the 1912-S nickel some years ago. These were struck very late in the year and only in a small quantity. They were, however, noticed by numismatists, and within a short time advertisements began appearing in The Numismatist. How many were saved by collectors and dealers is not known, but we would estimate the number to be fewer than one or two thousand, of which many later disappeared.
