This variety, which shares its reverse with the 1796 S-144, is quite challenging to find in any grade. The color is a mix of medium to light brown on the obverse, more uniform brown on the reverse. Average surfaces display scattered nicks as expected for the grade. The date has worn smooth, so the attribution falls on the location of Liberty's hair relative to LIBERTY. Notice that the raised curl between BE of LIBERTY is located more to the left than on the 1796 S-114, implying this is most likely the 1797 NC-5 obverse, which has this same curl location feature. The reverse has more definition, and can be confirmed through the leaf locations relative to the legend. This is a recent discovery and one of about two dozen confirmed in all grades of this rare NC variety.
