A popular scarcity that was struck to the tune of just 60,000 pieces from a No Motto reverse die -- San Francisco was the only mint to issue the No Motto style of the date. Philadelphia did not forward the new With Motto dies to San Francisco in a timely manner, so the western mint went to press with the old style die; later in the year the With Motto dies arrived in the city and were pressed into use, issuing a prolific 994,000 pieces of the new style. The silver-gray surfaces of the present piece exhibit soft steel-gray toning and champagne-gold highlights throughout. Visible marks are at a minimum, with no one mark significant enough to warrant individual mention. Choice for the grade and type.
