The bright yellow-gold surfaces are aglow with retained luster and honey-gold toning highlights. Evenly struck from clashed dies, and with surfaces that yield few marks of any substance, particularly to the unaided eye. A pleasing example of the date and grade combination. Just three Mint State examples of the date have been certified thus far by PCGS, which should serve to make a reasonably attractive AU specimen such as this a great find for an alert collector.
Gold dollars were produced at all five operating mints in 1855, including Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, San Francisco, and of course, Philadelphia, representing the only time in the denomination this occurs.
