Deep watery fields are graced by a pool of rich aqua-blue and crimson-rose toning bathes the coin in a richness seldom seen. The electric blue areas are relegated to the outer portions of the design, with the centers showing the handsome lighter rose hues. Fully struck of course, and carefully preserved since the time of issue. Mintage in Proof for the year amounted to a mere 813 pieces, this certainly one of the more attractive examples as well as technically desirable as well.
Proof 1901 Morgan Dollars in general, and the offered specimen in particular, are doubly desirable. First, the offered coin is in remarkably choice condition, an Ultra-Gem. Perhaps more important is that related circulation strikes of the 1901 are almost impossible to find, and an MS-66, if located, would be worth in the hundreds of thousands of dollars! While proof is a different method of manufacture, not a different grade, it stands to reason that if you are an advanced collector of Morgan Dollars and want a very high-grade 1901, the addition of this coin to your holdings would be much more satisfactory from the viewpoint of eye appeal than would be a lower level Mint State coin at the same price.
