Fifth rarest of the 14 New Orleans Mint contributions to the quarter eagle series, the 1856-O is a scarce find in all grades. Doug Winter (Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909, 2006 edition) accounts for only 115-125 survivors, the vast majority of which grade no finer EF. The present example is minimally worn, although the reverse is a bit blunt overall due to inadequacies with the strike. Even medium-gold color with a smattering of wispy abrasions, yet some modest "flash" readily evident in the fields. Original mintage: just 21,100 coins.
