Lot #7087. Encased Postage Stamps. B.F. Miles. 5 Cents. HB.183, EP.86, S.135. Extremely Fine.

Exceedingly Rare and Important Miles Encased

Only a Few Examples Known

Description: Stamp deep brown and nicely centered. Mica intact with a tiny craze beneath the P of POSTAGE, otherwise choice. Frame deep olive-gold. Case olive-gold to chestnut-brown with some silvering throughout. Like Claflin, a member of the Encased Postage Royal Family. The encasements of B.F. Miles are among the rarest – if not the rarest -- in the series; probably fewer than a dozen examples of HB-183 can be located today. There are only few examples traced, this among the finest. The Frederick Mayer example sold in 2007 reached $27,600.00. That was a brassier, naturally more lustrous example. Here, the mottled silver places it just a tad below that example. A beauty and essential for the highest end collectors of encased. Only offered when the top caliber encased postage collections are sold.

Purchased from Dennis Forgue, November 1987.

Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000
