CHINA--FOREIGN BANKS. Russo-Asiatic Bank. $50, ND (1910). P-S465.
Finest Certified Fifty Dollar Denomination Russo-Asiatic Bank
Description:
(S/M#O5-) This radiant BWC design is one which is seldom available at public sale. The more frequented $100 denomination is far more available than this $50 note and the last we handled was a Very Fine note which sold for $5,750.00 as lot number 8075 in our August 2009 ANA sale. This piece is currently the only example certified by PMG for the denomination with the $100 design being listed with eight pieces in their population report. The last we handled which came close in grade was an About Uncirculated note featured in our October 2008 New York sale which brought $17,250.00 as lot 496.
The note shows here with fantastic color and sharp detail of the highly ornate design with opposing dragons within the under-printing at left and right of center. Large "50," counters are seen at far left and right and detailed geometric lathe work creates several multi color guilloches making up the bordering features. An appealing verso design is noticed with a detailed vignette of a bank building at center with facing dragons at left and right and black guilloches at far left and right. Pearl of wisdom at top center and "XXX," overprinting at left right and below central vignette. Strong original paper is mentioned throughout and the note is free from any signs of circulation. A largely important opportunity for the advanced collector. PMG Pop. 1 / none finer.
