Exceedingly Rare December 26, 1814 $100 Proof

One of Only Two Seen by Us

Description: Plate D. Imprint of Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. India paper mounted on original card. Large format style. Design, style of Act of June 30, 1812. Upper right, majestic spread wing eagle holding olive branches in talons. Ornate end panels. Left end, ONE HUNDRED in cartouche. Right end, central oval obligation flanked by UNITED and STATES. Bottom, American shield with cannon, cannon balls, and flags. 5.4% Interest bearing note for financing the War of 1812. Whitman 8678. Hessler X80C. Krause-Lemke P9 The Plate Note. Exceedingly Rare. High Rarity-7. A stunning proof example from this historic series. Exceedingly rare and one of only two proofs we have observed. The other was in the Ford Collection Part VI Sale. A gorgeous proof example with broad face margins and sharp printing. Interestingly, PMG assigned a ‘’Net’’ designation to this museum piece for having once been backed lightly to another piece of card. Of course, this is meaningless and casts no detriment to the face. A magnificent and historic proof. Last auctioned back in 2000 at the Memphis Auction, it had never been seen publicly until that time. A key rarity and very desirable as the Krause-Lemke plate note.

From the 2000 Memphis Sale #199 (R.M. Smythe & Co. June 16, 2000, Lot 2201).
