Lot #4355. Large Size. Fr. 3. 1861 $5 Demand Note. PCGS Very Fine 30 PPQ.

PCGS Very Fine 30 PPQ 1861 Five Dollar "Boston" Demand Note

Description: An incredibly important offering for this type as a whole with all Demand Notes being rare with original problem free paper. This note is just that with completely original paper stock and devoid of any repairs or netting defects. We handled the finest PCGS Certified item for this Boston Five Dollar demand note type in our August 2012 ANA sale which resides in a PCGS Extremely Fine 40 holder and fetched $25,300.00. The note presented here steps on the toes of that piece in terms of appeal and exceeds it in terms of originality. Defined penned signatures adorn the title lines and bold greens make up the large "5" protector at center and flanking guilloches. Nicely margined for the type and seen with an ornate back design with great detail for this Very Fine grade. A low number of 971 in deep red inks is seen at upper left along with engraved "Series 2." and is not listed in current census information. A contemporary inscription at the back upper left reads "The first issue of green backs," and adds a bit of personality to this desirable type. A piece which will serve as a highlight within any advanced collection.
Estimate: $12,500 - $17,500
