Large Size. Fr. 334. 1891 $50 Silver Certificates. PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ.
Monumental Gem New 66 PPQ 1891 Fifty Dollar Silver Certificate Offering
Tied for the Finest Known With a Single Equal
Description:
This lot takes top honors within this well versed large-size offering and is a note which an incredible testament to survival. The higher face value and silver backing made notes of this denomination and type incredibly difficult for someone of the time period to simply set aside. The piece has been kept perfectly for the roughly 100 years of its existence and shows as nicely as the day the inks were laid to the paper. The last we handled for the catalog number was lot 7669 of our August 2012 ANA sale being graded PCGS Gem New 66 with no "PPQ," designation. That lot brought $28,2000.00 against a $20,000 to $30,000 pre-sale estimate. This piece, complete with "PPQ," designation, will prove the collector demand for such an accolade and for the absolute finest available of material.
The PCGS Currency population report shows just a pair of serial numbers at this lofty Gem New 66 PPQ level and none have yet to be offered publicly prior to the present example. The note is met with immediate and pronounced eye appeal being reserved only for items at these higher face values. The technical quality seen is inspiring and is seldom found with $50 Silver Certificates. Broad even borders house the well inked impression with great detail found in the detailed portrait vignette of Edward Everett at right. Brilliant overprints contrast to the fresh paper and an "open-back," design consists of hunter green ink tones and plentiful silk fibers. An item reserved for only the finest of United States paper money collections.
Estimate:
$45,000 - $65,000
