Lot #2037. 1798 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. Small Eagle. B-2, BB-81. Rarity-3. BB Die State II. 15 Stars on Obverse. VF-35 (PCGS).

Description: Splendid deep silver-gray on both sides with handsome and uniform color. The surfaces have smooth wear and are free of adjustment marks or bumps. For identification a minor planchet flaw is noted on the reverse rim just above the 3 o'clock position. Strong separation on Liberty's curls and the reverse is always bluntly struck as that die was heavily lapped before these were coined. Curiously the 15 star obverse die was obsolete in 1796, but apparently sat around unused until it was pressed into service to coin this issue, with the 8 added into the blank area for the date. An important type coin and long listed in the Guide Book as a separate variety, and with the even more desirable Small Eagle style reverse (used on just two die marriages of 33 this year).

PCGS# 6868.
