Lot #2150. 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar. 7/8 Tailfeathers. Strong. MS-66 (NGC).

Description: Incredible condition and quality for the specialist as this is one of just three coins certified at this level by NGC and exceeded by none in this category (or any other). Bright silver with a hint of pale gold when examined, the fields slightly reflective while the devices are satiny with frost. Examination finds little more than a couple of shallow bagmarks and scuffs, keeping the technical grade well into the Gem level and beyond. Boldly struck and highly appealing for the specialist. The die diagnostics include the bold hub blunder on the eagle's tail feathers, and the obverse die has its own unique qualities too, as the right serif is missing from the M of UNUM, but has been lightly added by the engraver, similar missing serifs on the N which lacks its inside lower left serif and the R is missing both its inside serifs. These nuances are being studied more and more as time passes. Exceptional quality and eye appeal for the date specialist of this most popular series.

NGC Census: 3; none finer within the designation.
