One of the highlights from our offering of Mexican coins in our Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo, anchored by the David Gray and Demar Collections, is this beautiful 1733-Mo MF, certified MS-63 (NGC). Attributed as Small crown, two mouldings on pillars variety, listed in the references as KM-103; Cal-type-146#776; Gil-M-8-5; FC-3a. This attribution shows a direct lineage between the coinages with the MX and Mo mintmarks, by linking shield side die, which was used for the 1733-MXMF with dot, as well as a number of 1733-MoMF Large crown or MX crown issues.
Aside from its historical importance as a link in the complex chain of the transition years of 1732-34, this coin is an absolutely beautiful example. The surface quality is exceptional, with lovely old toning accentuating a strong strike. NGC has certified only two examples at this grade level, with only two finer (an MS-64 and an MS-65). This coin should find itself in a world-class cabinet of world coins. If you are building a serious collection of Mexican or world coins, be sure to look at this coin.
