The November 2021 Official U.S. Currency Sale of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo is available at StacksBowers.com for viewing and bidding. Lot 20041 in the sale features an Fr. 247 1896 $2 Silver Certificate in PMG Superb Gem Uncirculated 67 EPQ.
This is a showstopper of a note, with bold color throughout and broad margins all around. The few unprinted areas in this complex design are clean and bright. It would be difficult to find a more attractive example. This prized "Educational" note offers an exceptionally beautiful design. The face features the vignette Science Presenting Steam and Electricity to Commerce and Manufacture, an allegorical scene and one of the finest of the era. The reverse of the note displays Robert Fulton and Samuel F.B. Morse, both remembered for their important contributions to science and technology. This note could be framed and mounted on the wall as a work of art, a reminder of a time when banknotes represented the Gilded Age, and engravers poured their hearts into such masterpieces. Seldom do notes of this caliber trade hands, as Gems such as this piece are tightly held. This example will be hotly contested once the bidding begins, so prepare to bid strongly if you want to bring this treasure home. A prize for the condition rarity enthusiast. PMG Pop 4/None Finer.
