The weekly iAuctions here at Stack’s Bowers are a great source for collectible coins within a reasonable budget! Every month (closing on the first Sunday of the month) our iAuctions will contain World and/or Ancient coins, including notable highlights such as this trial strike 20 Centavos piece struck in copper. This coin was struck at the mint located in the city of Culiacan within the state of Sinaloa. It is surmised that this piece was struck to test the dies and the mint officials used an off-metal planchet (copper, in this case).
The design features a tall and elegantly styled eagle atop a cactus, clutching a serpent in its beak and talons. The legend: “REPUBLICA MEXICANA” appears above the eagle, and the date of 1901 is found below the cactus. The reverse depicts the denomination in the center; “20 Centavos” with a partial wreath below and the mintmark (Cn), assayer’s initial (Q), and silver content (902,7) found as the upper legend. This example features a pleasing milk chocolate hue.
Look for this and other numismatic pieces in our upcoming iAuctions. These are held every Monday to Sunday, with world numismatic items being included in the sales that end on the first Sunday of every month.
