It can easily be said that National Bank Notes from the Territorial periods of states like Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, and Utah represent something truly special, items where demand often outstrips a limited supply of notes.
A specimen we are offering in our Spring 2025 Showcase Auction is no exception to the above statement. It represents the second Territorial offering since 2007 from rural Greenlee County, located along Arizona’s border with New Mexico. Issued by the First National Bank of Clifton (Charter# 5821) sometime after 1908 and before Arizona gained statehood in 1912, this note is one of just two Territorial notes known on this institution, and the only one that can trace its history at public auction.
The earliest offering of this note was roughly 18 years by our predecessor firm Bowers and Merena, when it sold for $57,500. Even by the standards of the present, it was a remarkable realization for a Territorial National.
This note is bound to be among the highlights of our Spring Showcase Auction. Also featured in that sale are rarities such as a Series of 1875 $100 from the National Bank of Commerce in New York (Charter# 733) and an Fr. 284 “Triple Signature” 1878 $10 Silver Certificate with the penned countersignature of Assistant Treasurer J.C. Hopper.
