Beautiful 1805 B-3 Draped Bust Quarter to be featured in our November 2018 Collectors Choice Auction, Part II

The 1805 Draped Bust quarter represents just the third year that quarters were made at the U.S. Mint and only the second year of the Draped Bust type. Five distinct varieties are known for the 1805 issue, employing four obverse and four reverse dies.  None of these varieties are exceptionally rare, and have ratings of Rarity-2 to Rarity-5-. Browning-3, as represented by the lovely Fine-12 (PCGS) example to be featured in our upcoming Collectors Choice Online Auction, has a Rarity-2 rating. It shares a reverse die with Browning-2 but has a distinct obverse die that is easily identified by a star 13 and a 5 in the date that are well separated from Liberty’s bust.

Though available in grades up through MS-65, the vast majority of specimens are heavily circulated or have surfaces problems. The present example is a truly delightful survivor that will be right for both type and specialist purposes. The surfaces are a pleasing lavender-gray with hints of peach and violet throughout. Softness at the stars on the reverse is typical for the variety, and the focal elements remain otherwise bold. It is a beautiful piece, gently worn and overall smooth, free from any notable blemishes or distractions. This example will be offered in Part II of our November 2018 Collectors Choice Online Auction, which will open for live bidding on Tuesday, November 20th.
