Beautiful German New Guinea “Bird of Paradise” 5 Mark

This week’s blog article is about one of my favorite world crowns, one that is essential to any collection of these silver dollar sized coins of the world — the German New Guinea 5 Mark featuring the visually arresting Bird of Paradise.

This short lived type coin, featuring the bird of paradise standing on a branch, with its plumage in full display, was issued only for one year, 1894. There were only 19,000 coins struck for circulation as well as a limited number of proof coins for sale to collectors. The coin being offered in our official auction for the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money, is graded Proof-66 by NGC, tied with one other at this level, and there is only a single coin graded higher. Aside from numerical grade, this lovely superb Gem features wonderful surface quality and very lovely toning in shades of blue and russet in the design elements.

This is truly a coin for those collectors who demand the very finest. If you are collecting world crowns by type (a wonderful and challenging pursuit), or just appreciate numismatic pieces of art, be sure to view, and bid, on this lovely coin when it crosses the auction block. Catalogs are now in production and will be in the mail in the coming weeks. A wide and diverse sale of world and ancient coins in gold, silver, platinum, and base metals, crowns and minors, and world paper money will be offered. If world numismatics is your specialty, and you are not currently on our mailing list, contact one of our auction services associates and request to receive our catalogs for the 2013 ANA World’s Fair of Money auction.
