Just 650 Proof 1891 Morgan dollars were produced, and the beautiful Cameo specimen in our upcoming iAuction event is easily among the finest Proofs of the date to be found today. The pristine surfaces glow with deep crimson, blue, and purple toning highlights on the obverse; the reverse is somewhat brilliant at the eagle but otherwise displays the same general toning pattern that adorns Miss Liberty’s portrait.
A complete set of Proof Morgan dollars makes an admirable collection that can be completed with patience, although the 1895 Proof-only issue can be a stopper in today’s numismatic marketplace. For the record, the 1895 rarity saw a mintage of 880 Proofs, but without attendant circulation strikes. The beautiful 1891 Proof Morgan dollar in our iAuction has a much lower mintage than the 1895 rarity, but it can be had for just a fraction – and a small one at that – of the cost of an 1895 Proof Morgan dollar.
