Did you know that on May 19, 2015, six years ago this week, Stack’s
Bowers Galleries sold the first lots of the D. Brent Pogue Collection? We knew
that the sale would be impressive, even spectacular. But, as our sales
continued, it soon became obvious that it would become the most valuable coin collection ever sold.
Some interesting numbers:
-In Part I, the first five lots alone totaled
-The average lot values of each sale are as
collection has seen 16 coins sell for over $1,000,000 and 51 coins realize
-993 of the 1,177 coins offered in the D. Brent
Pogue Collection were graded MS-60 or higher by PCGS. Of those, 825 were MS-65
or higher. 84 were Proofs while 7 were Specimens. Of the 93 other coins
offered, 33 were part of D. Brent Pogue’s “lowball” set. Interestingly enough,
one of those coins that graded less than Mint State was the coin that brought
the highest price in the collection so far – $8.4 million for the 1822 half
eagle in About Uncirculated.
