In our Official Currency Auction of the Whitman Spring Expo we are pleased to offer lot 20440, the finest known “King of Small Size” Fr. 1700 1933 $10 Silver Certificate, graded Superb Gem Uncirculated 67 PPQ by PCGS Banknote.
Other than ultra-high denomination $5000 and $10,000 bills, no other small-size note commands the respect and demand of the iconic 1933 $10 Silver Certificate. Printed in a minuscule quantity of 216,000, records indicate that 60,000 Series 1933 and the entire print run of 336,000 Series 1933A’s were destroyed in November 1935. As a result, only 156,000 Series 1933s were ever released. This is the only silver certificate issue to mention the word “coin” on the face: “Ten Dollars Payable in Silver Coin to the Bearer on Demand.” This series also differs from the later and far more common 1934 series notes as it has a Treasury seal at left and does not feature a blue “10” counter.
The presently offered note is one of only two Superb Gem 67s graded by the two major services, with nothing finer from either service. PCGS Banknote and PMG have each graded one, and an appearance of one of these at auction is always a significant event. Virtually perfectly centering, generous margins, bold crisp embossing and outstanding print and paper quality confirm the superb gem grade assigned by PCGS Banknote. We note as well our sale of the other 67, graded by PMG, in our August 2016 ANA sale for $105,750.
