The Fr. 1217 $500 Gold Certificate is considered a “common” Friedberg Number as far as large size $500 notes go. But the piece offered in lot 7182 of our November Showcase Auction is not just another evenly circulated example that has been the beneficiary of repairs or restorations, but rather is a note that has seen only light circulation and reflects eye appeal and quality seldom found for this issue. The aesthetic and technical qualities make it an exceptionally appealing Very Fine 35 note that PMG has designated EPQ.
Uncommon and vivid colors showcase the engraved elements of the design and accentuate the contrast between these elements. From the jet-black color of Lincoln’s portrait to the orange-gold that accounts for the balance of the design (particularly on the back), the aesthetic is enhanced by the crimson Treasury overprint and George D. Baldwin’s vignette Eagle with Flag visible to the right of the rounded “D” denomination counter on the back.
It is a superior representative and one confirmed by Track & Price where it stands toward the top of recorded survivors in terms of grade. Prospective bidders can bid online or in-person at Griffin Studios in Costa Mesa where this lot will be offered alongside a number of impressive and seldom-offered rarities in our November 2024 Showcase Auction.
