Richard Margolis (1931-2018), eminent American professional numismatist, passed away on November 24, 2018. During his lifetime, he developed a real passion for French coinage dating from the French Revolution to Louis XVIII, and possessed an incomparable library and collection of nearly 3,000 coins for this period. Behind a great man there is often a remarkable woman. Sara, Richard’s wife, had always encouraged him in his passion and she was, with her husband, among of the founders of the famous New York International Numismatic Convention. For all French collectors, Richard Margolis will remain a model for his research and publications on our coinage!
At 2:30 pm on Sunday, January 19, Stack’s Bowers Galleries will offer The Richard Margolis Collection Part III in Barclay Salon 1. This portion of Mr. Margolis’ French coinage collection is subtitled “A Corpus of Circulation Strikes and Pattern Issues” and builds on our first offering of French coins from this renowned cabinet in August 2024. We encourage those interested in this legendary numismatist to attend Laurent’s presentation if you are planning to be at the 2025 NYINC.
