With our March Collectors Choice Online World Paper Money Auction just a couple of weeks away (session 1 takes place on March 25, and session 2 on March 26), I would like to highlight some of the rare notes offered in that sale.
Lot 71218: EGYPT. National Bank of Egypt. 10 Pounds, 6.3.1918. P-14. PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
An attractive, problem-free circulated example of this popular type from Egypt. Much more difficult to find than the next type of this denomination, especially in circulated grades. This example has good color and fresh paper, perfect for a mid-grade type set.
Lot 71221: EGYPT. National Bank of Egypt. 1 Pound, 10.1.1930. P-20. PMG Very Fine 30.
A wholesome example of this popular type from Egypt with fresh color and paper. Very minor repairs are seen, but they do little to detract from the overall appearance of this piece. PMG Comments “Minor Repairs.”
Lot 72034: IRAQ. Government of Iraq. 1 Dinar, 1931 (ND 1941). P-15. PMG Very Fine 25.
This rarity features a portrait of King Faisal II at right, who ascended the throne at the age of three following the death of his father Ghazi I. Faisal would serve as the final King of Iraq until his death at the hands of a military-backed coup in 1958. This is a problem-free circulated Very Fine example with good eye-appeal for the technical grade.
Front artist’s rendition for an unadopted early 1960s design for the Central Bank of Jamaica. Completely executed by hand, this artist’s rendition shows similarities to the issued 1 pound note of the era, and may be a preliminary design that eventually led to the issuance of the new series. Holdered by PMG but not graded, this hand drawn design offers fantastic insight into the preliminary design process. The portrait of Queen Elizabeth II at right appears to be a loose copy of Pietro Annigoni’s portrait, executed in 1955 and extensively used on currency around the British realm, although never used as such on notes of Jamaica. The other primary design element is a pair of palm trees at left. A fantastic opportunity for the Caribbean or QEII specialist to acquire what is an early rendition for a Jamaican One Pound note. PMG Comments “Printer’s Annotations.”
Lot 72165: NEW HEBRIDES. Banque de l’Indochine. 100 Francs, 1944. P-12. PMG Very Fine 25.
Overprint on New Caledonia P-46b. One of several extremely difficult New Hebrides overprints issued during World War II from the Al Kugel Collection in this sale. These overprints were issued in very small quantities at a time when the New Hebrides were even more of a remote outpost than today. Not surprisingly, these types seldom become available and are rare in any grade. We have only seen this particular example appear at auction a few times in the past decade or more. PMG Comments “Minor Rust.”
