While there were a number of surprising results in our Spring 2025 Showcase Auction, one item, lot 20056, really shocked us by wildly exceeding our estimate. Printed during the early 1730s, this piece represents an unlikely survivor that avoided redemption in its own time. We presume it to be unique for the denomination and among a tiny handful of survivors from this emission.
Issued by the authorities of New Jersey during the Colonial period, this note, which can be traced to a long and distinguished history, realized $31,200 against a fairly conservative estimate of $2,000-$3,000.
It was once part of the collection of F.C.C. Boyd who originally paid $175 for it. It then found its way to the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection and realized $15,000 when sold in our May 2004 Part III auction of that incredible cabinet.
Over 20 years later these circumstances were repeated. After a frenzy of bidding that surprised me and others at the Costa Mesa office, the hammer finally fell after our estimate was significantly exceeded. This exciting event demonstrated the continued strength of the market for rare Colonial notes.
