Very recently I received an inquiry from a couple of thousand miles away. This prospective consignor had a coin that he received as a gift from his grandfather many decades ago. I asked what he had, and he told me it was an 1848 quarter eagle, but with CAL stamped on the reverse. That immediately caught my attention as it is a historically significant and rare issue that I love personally as an enthusiast.
His story is as fascinating as the coin itself. He sent the coin in to be certified by the ANA in 1986 and at the time the coin was given a grade of AU-50. He received an offer locally based on that grade, although that almost 40 year old grade seemed conservative after assessing the coin in hand. The piece has much sentimental value to the consignor, but he felt it was best to liquidate properly for his future heirs. I implored that he consign this 1848 CAL $2.50 to our auction. In this way he could maximize its value and take advantage of modern-day grading and current market conditions. He made the right choice, and we are pleased to highlight this wonderful gold piece in the Rarities Night session of our June Showcase sale.
