Gorgeous Nurnberg 1698 Peace and City View 4 Ducats, Ex: Eliasberg

Stack’s Bowers Galleries is thrilled to showcase another impressive European gold coin for the August ANA World Coin preview series, following last week’s Fine Sovereign of Queen Mary. For this week we have an incredible 17th century city view 4 Ducats from Nurnberg (Nuremberg).

This impressive gold piece features an obverse design of the personification of Peace, flanked by cherubs, who each support a shield emblazoned with the city’s arms. A Latin inscription encloses the design, with a chronogram date. The reverse is arguably the more impressive design, as it is dominated by a glorious view of the city featuring portions of the old Imperial Castle, St. Sebaldus and St. Lorenz Churches. Above the city is found "Jehovah" radiate, as the city is under the watch of Jehovah. This wonderfully executed design is a lovely representation of this great Free City. This coin displays gorgeous lemon yellow gold throughout and is sure to enhance even the most sophisticated collection.

While we are no longer accepting consignments for our August 2018 ANA Auction, we are accepting consignments for our October 2018 Collector’s Choice Online Auction as well as the January 2019 New York International Auction. In addition, we are currently taking consignments of Chinese and other Asian coins and currency for our April 2019 Hong Kong Showcase Auction. If you are interested in consigning your coins and paper currency (whether a whole collection or a single rarity) contact one of our consignment directors.
