Extremely Rare and Important Billete Provisional Overprint-Ex Carter

Lot 10043 from our
upcoming official auction of the New York Internationational Numismatic
Convention offers an important highlight from the Eldorado Collection: Banco de
la República Billete Provisional – Overprinted on Casa de Moneda de Medellín. 2
½ Pesos. ND (1923). P-351 is an extremely rare Provisional overprint note with
an illustrious pedigree. Long recognized as one of the key notes from the
República series, it is rarely encountered. This example hails from the Amon
Carter, Jr. Collection and was last sold in December 1997 at Spink America as
part of the paired Lot 522. That two note lot realized $7,150. The ABNCo.
printed host is a satisfying example, clean and sharp, with normal wear for the
grade. The overprint on the deep green back is bold. It is the finest graded,
much finer than the repaired Ward Collection note that still realized $6,210 at
its aggressive opening bid. This finer note, exceptionally well pedigreed from these
two illustrious cabinets, is worthy of exceeding that result.

This note is featured in
Session A which will cross the block on January 11, beginning at Noon ET at the
Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City. The auction is available for viewing online
at StacksBowers.com.
