Despite a mintage of 1,360,000, the 1907-S Barber quarter is the third least seen by PCGS, with a total graded population of just 253 coins. Have collectors simply overlooked this date in pursuit of the lower total populations of the 1896-S, 1899-S and 1901-S (among others), or is it truly difficult to find?
Whatever the case, we are pleased to offer a lovely AU-55 (PCGS) example in lot 93168 of our February 12 Collectors Choice Online auction of United States coins. With just 88 specimens graded higher, (only 12 in AU-58 and none in MS-60 or MS-61), this AU-55 is an excellent entry point before plunging in at higher Mint State levels. Clean, well-struck, with good symmetry and mottled gunmetal surfaces, it would nestle well into a higher end collection or as a stand-alone type coin. Some typical shield wear keeps this from a higher grade, but does not detract from the overall pleasing balance of the coin.
Here is an opportunity for any collector looking to add a high-grade, rarer Barber quarter to their collection. To view the entire February 12 CCO Auction visit StacksBowers.com.
