So many times, through various channels in numismatics we hear about packages containing currency, rare coins and bullion going missing and never reaching their intended destinations with contents gone forever.
How can we make it harder for thieves to steal our valuables?
• Secure packing is the first step. Minimize the sounds and rattles coming from inside a package – there is no such thing as enough packing material.
• Always ship items in a box within a box. If the outer carton gets damaged, the inner box will protect items from pilferage. Securely tape the ends, request tracking and use shipping insurance provided by a numismatic insurance provider.
• If you do suffer a loss, your insurance carrier will cover the contents if their packing/shipping instructions were followed. Do not put any phrases such as “rare coins” on packages. If the company name contains the words “coins” or “currency,” abbreviate accordingly. USPS, Fed Ex, and UPS all have their pros and cons when it comes to shipping. Crime rings have infiltrated most carriers and reports of arrests of these unscrupulous individuals for theft are increasing.
• Never ship on a Friday, to protect packages from being in limbo over a weekend. It is best to ship express/next day Monday-Thursday especially when the value is near $100,000.
• For higher values, armored carriers such as Brinks or Malca Amit work very well and offer great service and protection at a fair price.
• Hand carrying valuables is another option and safer, although one must remain vigilant, being wary of any distractions and making sure not to be followed when traveling.
As values for collectibles continue to rise, the criminal element will hone their skills to better separate valuables from their owners. Remember to keep it simple – drawing the least attraction to your package reduces the odds of theft.
