Ron Gillio Celebrates 50th Anniversary as ANA Member

IRVINE, Calif. (July 11, 2014) — Stack’s Bowers Galleries is pleased to congratulate senior numismatist and consignment director Ron Gillio as he celebrates 50 years as a member of the American Numismatic Association (ANA).

Gillio began his career in numismatics in 1959. He joined the ANA five years later, and attended his first ANA convention in Cleveland in 1964. Since then, he has never missed one of these events. “I’ve attended every ANA show since becoming a member and this August will be my 50th show — that’s 50 years in a row — which I feel is an extraordinary accomplishment,” said Gillio. “And I can truly say that I have enjoyed each and every one.”

Since becoming a member, Ron Gillio has been involved with the ANA in many capacities. Through the 1980s, Gillio held grading and authentication seminars for the ANA and he has received many awards from ANA presidents over the years. In 1993 and 1995, he was appointed to consumer protection committees.

As president of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG), he was part of a team that joined with the ANA to work on grading and encapsulating for American Numismatic Association Certification Service (ANACS). While at the PNG, Gillio served on the board of directors for 17 years and held various executive titles, including president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. In addition, he served on the consumer protection board and other committees. He is also recognized as the co-author of California Pioneer Fractional Gold — the most authoritative reference work on California pioneer fractional gold coins. For many years he has been a contributor to A Guide Book of United States Coins: The Official Red Book.

In addition to Gillio’s work with Stack’s Bowers Galleries, he has been general chairman of the popular Long Beach, Calif., and Santa Clara, Calif. Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo. He also runs a retail store in Santa Barbara Calif. — Gillio Rare Coins & Fine Jewelry — one of the largest buyers, sellers and importers of rare coins in the United States. He has conducted many multi-million dollar auction sales in the United States, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore. He is an official appraiser for the State of California and has served as an auctioneer for the United States Marshal’s Office.

“We are delighted to celebrate Ron’s extensive efforts with the ANA,” said Brian Kendrella, president of  Stack’s Bowers Galleries. “We look forward to Ron’s continuing work with us and are appreciative of all his accomplishments with our firm, with the ANA and PNG, and elsewhere in numismatics.”
