Steam Ship Central America

“The Ship of Gold”

The gold bars recovered from the S.S. Central America are perhaps the most talked-about treasure from the shipwreck. These bars are sizable, to say the least, and vary in weight, purity, and value. Found on the ship were gold ingots from the Assay Office of Harris, Marchand & Co. (197 J St. Sacramento, CA), Assay Office and Banking House of Henry Hentsch (120 Montgomery St. San Francisco, CA), Justh & Hunter Assayers (188 Montgomery St. San Francisco, CA), and Kellogg & Humbert Assayers (108 Montgomery St. San Francisco, CA). Stack’s Bowers Galleries has had a rich history of selling S.S. Central America gold bars. To see more bars and past prices realized, visit our Auction Archives.
