The Sydney F. Martin Collection of

Pitt Tokens

Of the 7 different varities of Pitt Tokens, the Sydney F. Martin Collection features 2. However, it is important to note that Sydney F. Martin’s Pitt Tokens are rather interesting. Take for example his 1766 Pitt Halfpenny Token: the coin is a full obverse brockage, which was created when an already struck coin adhered to the reverse die during the coining of a subsequent piece, creating a coin with a normally struck obverse and an incuse obverse impression on the reverse. Syd loved errors for what they could teach us about the minting process, as well for their eye-catching distinctiveness. Brockages are perhaps the most regal of striking errors, rarer than a multiple strike or off-center and often more impressive to look at as well. This coin is the only brockage we have seen of a Pitt Token, therefore making it very rare.
