T-1 Montgomery $1000 Featured in November 2021 Auction

The November 2021 U.S. Currency sale is available for viewing and bidding at StacksBowers.com. In this sale we are pleased to offer lot 20018, a T-1 1861 $1,000 Confederate Currency note graded Very Fine 20 Net Restoration, Stains by PMG (No. 181, Plate A).

The keynote of the "Big Six" of Confederate currency, just 607 of these 1861 $1000s were issued and today around 150 are known to survive. These National Bank Note Company produced notes are immediately recognizable for their brilliant green tints. The portrait of John C. Calhoun appears at bottom left while Andrew Jackson is at bottom right. Intricate counters occupy the top corners. These $1000 notes, as well as the first $500s, $100s and $50s were issued while the Confederate capital was in Montgomery and thus, they are known as "Montgomery notes." The offered note does not have punch cancellations. PMG comments "Restoration, Stains."
