Stack’s Bowers Galleries is honored to have been awarded a contract from the United States Mint to auction an exciting selection of modern rarities. Presented in a stand-alone auction on Thursday, December 12, 2024, will be a special offering of 2024 Privy Mark Flowing Hair High Relief gold coins struck to commemorate the 230th anniversary of America’s first silver dollar. We had the privilege of selling the first struck of the original 1794 Flowing Hair dollars in January 2013 for $ 10,016,875, which set a then-record for the most valuable coin ever sold.
This 2024 Privy Mark 230th Anniversary coin is the modern analogue to this classic rarity and features the same inspirational design as interpreted by the Mint’s modern artists. While copper die trials are known for the 1794 dollar, these anniversary coins offer the only glimpse at what might have been if Mint Director Rittenhouse had ordered one to be struck in gold. This coin (lot 11001), the VERY FIRST one struck, is the single most significant example of this historic series, which has drawn interest from collectors all over the world.
Also included with the very first struck coin are the canceled obverse and reverse dies used to strike these inspiring pieces. The dies are housed in a custom-made box and provide an unprecedented glimpse into the Mint’s state-of-the-art production process. For advanced collectors of classic Flowing Hair coinage or modern gold rarities, this lot represents a monumental prize.
In recognition of this historic offering, Stack’s Bowers Galleries will waive the Buyer’s Premium on these 230th Anniversary gold coins, meaning that the highest bid on each lot (the hammer price) will be the final amount paid by the winning bidder (excluding shipping fees).
