Presented in the Rarities Night session of our November 2024 Showcase Auction is a phenomenal condition rarity whose existence with such stunning rainbow toning defines the epitome of mother nature’s beauty. This is a spectacular 1946 Walking Liberty half dollar in every sense. From a technical standpoint, this coin is truly superb, with essentially flawless surfaces, as reflected in the MS-68 grade awarded by PCGS. A somewhat soft strike left some of the highest details a touch flat, which is normal. What sets this example apart from virtually any other Walking Liberty half dollar in existence is the vivid, radiant rainbow toning on both sides. The spectrum of color is apparent in all conditions and becomes electric when examined under a light. It is nearly impossible to find a Walker with the extreme abundance of surface area covered with such premium toning. This coin was wrapped in tissue paper and stored inside a small paper envelope for many decades. This caused both the obverse and reverse to acquire such gorgeous toning, color rarely found on half dollars of this design. The bold and vibrant displays of aqua, lime-green, magenta and orange are breathtaking.
This coin is tied for the finest known of its date when considering examples graded by both PCGS and NGC, speaking to the surface quality beneath its stunning toning. For the collector of superb Walking Liberty half dollars or beautifully toned type coins, it is an exceptional coin that will be just right for a fabulous cabinet. It is rare that a truly awe-inspiring later date Walker appears on the market and, once this coin finds its way into a tightly held collection, it will likely be many years, if not decades before collectors get another chance to acquire this ultra-gem half dollar.
